FIVE friends escaped death after the Proton Saga BLM they were travelling in plunged 30.5m into a ravine in Jalan Teluk Bahang, near Titi Kerawang today.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Mohd Hafiz Hafizal Timaradin said the department received a call on the incident at 3.03pm, after which the first fire engine from Teluk Bahang station rushed to the scene.

Upon arrival, firemen found the car with five men aged 20 and 21 had plunged into a ravine, with all victims trapped in the vehicle.

“The operations commander then carried out a size-up at the location and ordered firemen to extract the victims using special equipment. They were brought up safely,” he said when contacted today.

He said all of them sustained light injuries and were brought to the hospital for further treatment. The rescue operation concluded at 4.44pm.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Hafiz said eight units of flats in block A, Taman Seri Delima in Juru were razed in a fire at about 3.30pm today.

He said the houses, each measuring 56 sq m on the fourth and highest floor, were 40% destroyed.  

“Upon arrival, the team found the fire spreading at the roof of the houses and firefighters took about half an hour to put out the blaze,” he said. 

No casualties were reported, with residents of the eight houses able to run to safety.

A probe into the cause of the fire is ongoing. – Bernama, August 8, 2022.
